October 3, 2008 The University of Mary Washington men's and women's swimming teams opened the 2008-09 season at the Potomac Relay Invitational at American University on Friday as the only non-NCAA Division I school at the meet. September 23, 2008 The 4th annual UMW 5K Run was held on September 20, 2008 as part of the UMW Family Weekend Program. The race set a record for the number of runners with 165 representing eleven different states. The race kicked off at 7:30 AM Saturday morning with a field that included five faculty members, fifteen graduates, fifty-four parents, and ninety-one students. The course included a scenic run through the heart of the UMW campus and the surrounding neighborhoods. With perfect weather, a record crowd and enthusiastic onlookers, the race was a terrific success. •more

September 19, 2008 The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team will retire Liz Hickey's uniform #44 on November 18 at the home opener against Washington & Lee University at 7:00 p.m. The jersey retirement is the first ever in school history. •more

August 3, 2008 Recent University of Mary Washington graduate Caitlin Erickson (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair) is featured in the August 4 issue of Sports Illustrated magazine in the "Faces in the Crowd" segment. Erickson, the all-time leading women's lacrosse scorer in school history, led the nation in assists per game and points per game this season, breaking the NCAA Division III record for points per game this season with 7.94 PPG. Erickson is the second UMW athlete to be featured in Sports Illustrated, following field hockey great Jessica Morris, who appeared in the magazine on December 24, 2001. •more
July 18, 2008 The University of Mary Washington Athletic Hall of Fame will induct four new members as the 12th induction class on October 24, 2008, as part of the school’s Homecoming celebration. Former swimming All-Americans Eliza Barcus Brown (’96) and Chris Rice (’98) and multisport standouts Eliza Huber Scott (’96) and Jennifer Wilson Buck (‘94) comprise this year’s class. •more
