Digital
Video
Digital video utilizes similar technology to
digital audio,
but adds a moving picture component. AVI files
on Windows machines, and Quicktime files on
the Macintosh are the common formats, but there
are also the compressed formats, such as Windows
Media, and Real. Digital video is not necessarily
better than analog video, just a different way
of delivering video content. Since they are
digital files, they will maintain their quality
no matter how many times they are copied.
DVD and digital video tape (mini-DV or digital-8
format) are the common manifestations of digital
video in the consumer world. Digital video shot
with a digital camcorder can be rapidly transferred
to your computer via a special cable, then edited
and saved in a format that can be easily shared
with anyone owning a modern computer. You can
even save and record the video you created on
a DVD.
