Dear UMW Students:
In a dizzying week, our lives have been altered in profound ways. You are Mary Washington students, and we will work together to get through this.
A few things to note today:
Residential Students Move Out and Belongings Retrieval
By Monday, March 23, the majority of residential students will have departed campus. Students who still have belongings on campus have been asked to make arrangements to retrieve their belongings between March 24th and April 1st. If you have not made arrangements to retrieve your belongings, please do so by reading this advisory and filling out the form.
We are aware that public health advisories and directives from the state or federal government might limit travel in the next few days and weeks. In that case, we will communicate with you about planning with regard to belongings retrieval.
Please note that belongings retrieval will be staggered to allow for social distancing. As you retrieve your belongings, please follow Centers for Disease Control and Virginia Department of Health advisories: any person who is ill should remain home, and follow the recommended procedures regarding hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. Educational signs posted in the residence halls will provide guidance.
2020 Commencement
President Paino released a message about postponing Commencement until the Fall. In his words to graduating seniors, “all of us want to celebrate you and give you a chance to walk across that stage. You are a unique class in the history of Mary Washington, full of resilience and determination in the face of unprecedented obstacles. Over the next few weeks we will pull together our commencement planning team, along with students, faculty, and staff to find the right day, time, and way to celebrate during the fall semester.”
Counseling Services
Right now, most of us are feeling physically and mentally unsettled. The Talley Center has made arrangements to work with students online during their regular office hours. The Talley site includes 24/7 crisis hotlines and text lines so that anyone who may be in distress can reach immediate support by visiting the webpage.
Campus Buildings and the Simpson Library
UMW’s FAQ has the most updated information about building hours and other important services.
The Simpson Library has extended due dates for library materials and is waiving fines and fees. If you need a scan of library materials, including texts on reserve, please complete this form: https://libraries.umw.edu/general-digitization-request-form/ . The Library staff has prepared a guide to library services that can be accessed here: https://libguides.umw.edu/online.
Thank you for reading my emails! It is the best way to communicate important information to you.
Sending my warm wishes,
Juliette Landphair, Ph.D.
Vice President for Student Affairs
