Dear residential students,
As promised, I am following up with you about next steps with regard to belongings retrieval from the residence halls. Please read this email in its entirety before clicking on any links.
We have been consulting with UMW’s Public Safety and Emergency Management team and state public health officials to construct a plan that maximizes the health and welfare of our communities while still offering an opportunity for students to collect belongings. The evolving nature of this pandemic continues to bring uncertainty and a potential need to alter plans further, but for the time being, we are providing the following parameters for you to retrieve your belongings.
- Students may sign up for an available time slot beginning April 9 to come to campus to collect belongings and turn in your key (check your email for the specific link to your hall). We are providing time slots over the next three weeks for this opportunity and will evaluate further options as the need arises.
- We are limiting the number of sign-ups that can occur on a particular day per building. We will allow only a handful of students (less than ten) in a residence hall to retrieve their belongings in the morning and only a handful of students (less than ten) in a residence hall to retrieve their belongings during the afternoon. Our smaller buildings will be more restrictive. If you find the slots filled on your desired day, you will need to select an alternative day. We will not be making exemptions to the limits set forth in the sign-up forms.
- Access will be provided on your student ID for the day of your sign-up. Students who have not signed up for a time or arrive on a different day will not be granted entry into the residence hall.
- Please coordinate with your roommate(s) to ensure you are NOT coming on the same day.
- You do not have to feel compelled to come to campus at this time. If you are uncomfortable with traveling or it is prohibitive for you to do so at this time, you do not need to sign up for a slot. Later this month, we will reach out to students who have not selected a time to identify appropriate alternatives.
- We ask that you only bring with you the number of people necessary to assist with your move. It will be incumbent upon all individuals who come to campus to practice social distancing from other students and families.
- Staff and supplies at UMW are limited at this time. We ask that you bring any personal protective equipment that will make you feel safe and protected. This may include masks, gloves, booties, Clorox wipes, etc. We also encourage you to bring a dolly or cart if needed. The rolling boxes and dollies that are available during move-in will not be available for move-out.
- If you have exhibited symptoms of illness, been around anyone who has exhibited symptoms, or have been in contact with anyone who has a confirmed or presumptive case of COVID-19, we ask that you quarantine for a 14-day period before coming to campus.
- Once you have removed your belongings, please:
- Return your space into check-in condition. Please bring some basic supplies to sweep your floors and clean up any spills.
- Please take all trash, including spoiled food, to the dumpsters.
- If you can, de-loft any lofted or bunked beds. All bed parts should remain in the room.
- Please close all windows, turn off all lights, and secure your door.
- Return your key (and RFID tag for Eagle parking deck, if applicable) to one of the following three locations: Eagle Landing front desk, UMW Apartments Building 11 (key box mounted outside the RA office door), or Brent House (lock box in lobby).
Again, while this is an opportunity for you to come and collect your possessions, you are not required to do so if you are concerned about your health and well-being or circumstances prevent you from doing so. If you have already moved out and just need to return your key, you may do so by mailing the key (with tracking) to:
University of Mary Washington
Attn: Eagle Landing Front Desk
1301 College Avenue
Fredericksburg, VA 22401
If you have moved out, but have lost your key, please email reslife@umw.edu.
Thank you for your continued patience, understanding, and cooperation as we develop strategies to manage the complexities of this process. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at reslife@umw.edu.
Sincerely,
Dave Fleming
Assistant Dean for Residence Life and Housing
