This message marks the start of the March 7, 2023, Virginia Statewide Tornado Drill. This is only a DRILL and TEST of the UMW Alert emergency notification system. This drill will begin at 9:45; there will be no further UMW Alert messages. Participation in this drill is optional.
To participate, identify or gather in a shelter area and review with coworkers, students, or friends.
In the event of a Tornado Warning:
- Go to a shelter area, such as a basement or the lowest level in the building;
- If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls;
- Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside;
- Get under a sturdy table and use your arms to protect your head and neck;
- Do not open the windows.

Be Prepared – Public Safety Application: Rave Guardian is a smartphone app that improves communication and safety across the university campuses. This application allows users to quickly and conveniently contact UMW Police to relay their location and report tips or crimes observed on campus. Rave Guardian is available for download for free from the iTunes Store and the Google Play store.
