Academic Degrees
Debra L. Hydorn, Professor of Mathematics, earned a Ph.D. (1993) in statistics from the University of Michigan, after receiving an M.S. (1988) in mathematics from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She holds a B.S. (1980) in mathematics and zoology from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Hydorn has given several presentations at professional conferences, most recently “Small Teaching in Introduction to Discrete Mathematics” at the 2017 Joint Mathematics Meeting in Atlanta and “Visual and Auditory Tools to Support Student Learning” with Suzanne Sumner at the 2017 International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics in Chicago. In addition, she has given a presentation at the 2016 Joint Mathematics Meetings on a classification of arrangements of Wang tiles and another on undergraduate research in statistics at the 2015 Joint Statistical Meetings.
Her publications include a 2007 article on service learning published in the Journal of Statistics Education and a chapter on service learning in statistics courses for the 2005 Mathematical Association of America publication “Mathematics in Service to the Community.” She has received several grants from the University for a variety of projects including curriculum development and computer usage in the undergraduate curriculum. Most recently, Dr. Hydorn was selected to participate in the 2016 Mathematics Association of America PIC MATH program and in the 2015 Office of Naval Research Summary Fellow Program. In addition, she has been a Co-PI on several VA Department of Education grants with colleagues in the College of Education to provide professional development to K-12 teachers.
Dr. Hydorn is a member of the American Statistical Association, the Mathematics Association of America, the Council on Undergraduate Research and the Virginia Academy of Science. She serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Statistics Education and as a Councilor for the Mathematics and Computer Science Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research.
