Academic Degrees
Janet A. Asper, Associate Professor of Chemistry, earned a Ph.D. (2001) in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, after receiving a B.S. (1994) in biochemistry and zoology from Ohio University. Her research interests include organic and bioorganic chemistry, protecting group methods for the guanidine functional group, and the use of NMR spectroscopy in organic chemistry and chemical education.
Dr. Asper collaborates with chemists at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren Va., to maintain the Navy-owned NMR spectrometer that is housed at UMW. In 2006, she received a grant from the Petroleum Research Fund of the American Chemical Society. She is the Alternate Councilor of the Virginia Local Section of the American Chemical Society and a current member of the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, the American Chemical Society, and the Chemical Education and Organic divisions of the American Chemical Society.
