Emmanuel “Mickey” Skamangas is a retired senior Aerospace Engineer, having worked at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia, for 35 years. The majority of his career was spent conducting performance analyses on Naval air and missile defense systems, and he was viewed as a subject matter expert for the modeling and simulation of Navy air and missile defense systems. He was heavily involved in the initial phases of the Navy’s efforts to develop and deploy a ballistic missile defense capability. In support of the Missile Defense Agency, he led or participated in multiple Failure Review Board investigations to determine the root causes of flight-test failures. During his career, he also served as the first director of Dahlgren’s Mission Engineering and Analysis Directorate, and was the first Senior Science and Technical Manager for Surface Warfare Analysis.
Dr. Skamangas holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Virginia Tech, and a B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering from Penn State. He was the first Aerospace Engineering remote-learning student to receive a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.
Dr. Skamangas is an Adjunct Professor of physics at UMW and also teaches high school physics at Fredericksburg Christian School. In his spare time, he serves as a docent at the Shannon Air Museum and also as a volunteer at the Ferry Farm Archeological Laboratory. He and his wife, Kelly, reside in Stafford County.
