In order to lift up the imprint of civil rights pioneer and UMW Distinguished History Professor Dr. James Farmer, Farmer Legacy 2020 is providing an opportunity for community members to apply for mini-grants up to $250 for initiatives, programs, and other proposals that meet the guidelines as described below. Students, staff, and faculty have ideas that, with a little financial help, could further showcase UMW’s commitment to social justice, inclusive excellence, service, and community engagement.
The grants are available during the 2020 calendar year (spring, summer, fall) until the funding runs out.
Mission and Objectives of Farmer Legacy 2020
Farmer Legacy 2020 recognizes the imprint of Dr. Farmer’s work as a national civil rights activist and educator at Mary Washington. Farmer Legacy 2020 distinguishes Farmer’s legacy by showcasing the ways in which UMW advances inclusive excellence and community and civic engagement and envisions and implements ways in which to strengthen democratic ideals in our future work and endeavors. Farmer Legacy 2020 seeks to fulfill the following specific objectives:
- Reflection: Reflect upon the ways in which James Farmer changed the course of US history through his activism and influenced UMW’s campus and community through his tenure here as a history professor from 1985-1998.
- Engagement: Design strategies to motivate all members of the UMW community to participate and to collaborate with community organizations and civic action programs.
- Action: Envision ways in which UMW can continue to promote inclusive excellence and community and civic engagement in the classroom, on campus, and in the community beyond 2020.
