UMW is counting down to Valentine’s Day with a series of Mary Washington love stories.
They fell in love with the school, then with each other. Meet ’95 UMW grads Gin and Steve Schaffer.
How did it all start?
Gin was working as a front desk attendant during Mercer Hall’s residence days. Steve was moving in and asked Gin where the mailroom was. She gladly offered to show him and friendship soon turned to romance.
What did they do together on campus?
In addition to living in the cozy, 40-person Mercer Hall, Gin and Steve both worked in Woodard Hall offices, Steve with The Bullet and Gin with Student Activities, and often met for lunch at the Nest.
Favorite spot off campus?
During college, the couple took in the history of Fredericksburg by walking and driving around the city, and occasionally got meals at Spanky’s (where Capital Ale House is today) or Sammy T’s.
What was the wedding like?
Gin and Steve got married in Fredericksburg Square downtown in 1998 – and were the first to get married in the historic spot.
Where are they now?
After living in Massachusetts for a while, Gin and Steve returned to Fredericksburg with their two kids. You’ll still catch them around campus, cheering at Eagles basketball games and grabbing pizza at the Nest.
