Khalil Yazdi has been named Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Vice President for Information Technology and Institutional Research at the University of Mary Washington.
Serving as the link between the operations of data collection, analyses and reporting and information technology, Dr. Yazdi will oversee the university’s Information Resources division, as well as the Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research. He will join the executive staff as a direct report to the president.
“Dr. Yazdi brings a wealth of knowledge to the University of Mary Washington, as well as a track record for supporting a high quality educational environment, improving services for the university community, lowering costs and delivering results,” said UMW President Judy G. Hample.
With nearly 20 years of experience in the areas of information technology and institutional research, Dr. Yazdi most recently served the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) as System Chief Information Officer and Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and System Research. In this role, he provided leadership to enterprise technology strategy and deployment, strategic planning and business intelligence for a 14-university system with more than 12,000 employees and 107,000 students. He was responsible for an annual budget averaging $16 million, the activities of five unit directors, 90 full-time staff and 25 consultants.
During his tenure, Dr. Yazdi authored the Strategic Plan for System-Wide Enterprise Resource Planning and Shared Information Technology Services, which resulted in the creation of the System Technology Consortium. He also directed the technical design and implementation of the PASSHE performance outcomes assessment and performance-based funding programs and directed the development and analysis of a multi-year economic impact study and report. In addition, he served as the Vice Provost for Information Technology at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, a PASSHE institution, where he set information technology strategy and direction from 1999-2000.
Prior to arriving at PASSHE, Dr. Yazdi held administrative positions in Academic Affairs, Institutional Research and Assessment, and Management Information Systems at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, where he also served on the economics and finance faculty for 10 years. He has served on the Ben Franklin Technology Development Board for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Advisory Group on Enterprise Information System and Services for EDUCAUSE, the Higher Education Advisory Group for Microsoft and the System Technology Consortium Executive Board for PASSHE. Dr. Yazdi holds a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D., all in economics, from the University of Houston.
