The online magazine Forbes.com has recently recognized the University of Mary Washington as the eighth best public college in the South.
The latest ranking, which is a regional listing of magazine’s “America’s Best Colleges” guide released last August, looks at the best public and private schools in 16 southern states and the District of Columbia.
Forbes.com ranks schools on such factors as graduation rate; national and global awards by students and faculty; students’ satisfaction with their professors; average debt upon graduation; and postgraduate success.
The August ranking listed the University of Mary Washington as the 13th best public college and 58th in the magazine’s list of “America’s Best Values.” Overall, UMW ranked 121st out of 600 undergraduate institutions that the magazine considers the nation’s best.
The list is compiled in conjunction the Center for College Affordability and Productivity (CCAP). The CCAP ranks only the top 15 percent of the nation’s more than 4,000 colleges and universities.
Other Virginia schools listed in the top 10 “Best Colleges in the South” include: the College of William & Mary (2), the University of Virginia (4), Virginia Military Institute (6). The U.S. Naval Academy ranked first in the regional listing.
In recent years, the University of Mary Washington has seen its academic reputation
garner national recognition in other selective guidebooks, including Fiske Guide to Colleges, the Princeton Review, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, U.S. News & World Report, Peterson’s Competitive Colleges and Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges.
