The University of Mary Washington Department of Art and Art History and the Fredericksburg Visitor Center will host two student art exhibitions in April.
The Annual Student Art Exhibition, which showcases the select works of UMW students, will be open from Thursday, April 1 through Sunday, April 18, in the duPont Gallery. An opening reception will be held on April 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. Both the exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public.
Winners of juror and media awards will be announced at the opening reception. The exhibition will display student artworks selected by juror Fiona Ross, adjunct assistant professor at University of Richmond. Ross also will choose one work to receive the Melchers Gray Purchase Award that will become a part of the University’s permanent collection.
During the run of the show, the duPont Gallery will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Free parking is designated for gallery visitors in a lot across College Avenue at Thornton Street.
In conjunction with the Annual Student Art Exhibition, the Fredericksburg Visitor Center will host the “Salon des Refusés” exhibition. An opening reception will be held Friday, April 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the center at 706 Caroline St. in historic downtown Fredericksburg. The “Salon des Refusés,” which features works that were not accepted for the juried student show, will be displayed during the month of April.
