Architect Dana W.A. Herlong received the Patricia Lacey Metzger Distinguished Achievement Award during the 17th annual Leadership Colloquium for Professional Women at the University of Mary Washington on Thursday, November 4.
Herlong is president of Herlong Associates Inc., a facilities management and architecture firm headquartered in Fredericksburg. Herlong was recognized for her career achievements, which include over three decades of experience in the architectural field, as well as extensive involvement in business and community organizations.
The Metzger award recognizes individuals who uphold high standards in their professional and personal lives while fulfilling a career goal of significant stature. The award, presented annually at the colloquium held at the university’s Stafford campus, is given in memory of the late Metzger, a UMW professor and founder of the event.
Herlong is a licensed architect certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. She has been involved in a wide range of design projects, from municipal, education and public safety buildings to wineries, visitor centers and historic restorations.
Herlong has a long record of active involvement in various business and community groups. She currently serves on the Fredericksburg Economic Development Authority (EDA) and the Spotsylvania Career and Technical Education Council, and she is a longstanding member of the Fredericksburg Rotary Club.
She previously served on the Rappahannock Area United Way board, the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce board and the Spotsylvania County Building Code Appeals Board. She has served on the Caroline County Business Roundtable and been active in the EDA’s Jumpstart! Fredericksburg initiative. Only past colloquium participants are eligible to receive the Metzger Award.
The 2010 colloquium had the theme of “Raising the Stakes with Creative Leadership.” The program offered seminars about inspiring yourself and others, emphasizing the personal touch, recognizing employees, bringing spontaneity and fun into everyday life, creative problem-solving, communication, office aesthetics and the importance of passions.
The colloquium prepares women to advance in leadership roles at various stages of their careers. The program attracts managers, administrators, educators, business owners and leaders of public, private and nonprofit organizations.
Marcia K. Thompson, a mentor mediator, a trainer, an alternative dispute resolution consultant and a licensed attorney specializing in family and juvenile law, delivered the keynote speech.
The colloquium is hosted annually by the University of Mary Washington. This year’s program was cosponsored by GEICO, NSWC Federal Credit Union, Mary Washington Healthcare, Childress Heating & A/C and Hilldrup Moving and Storage.
