Fred A. Pierce III has been named associate provost for enrollment management and student services at the University of Mary Washington. Pierce, who currently serves as director of undergraduate programs for the University of Tennessee’s College of Business Administration, will oversee all matters related to enrollment, recruitment and student services at Mary Washington. He begins work at UMW July 25.
“Fred has emerged from an extensive pool of highly qualified individuals,” said Provost Jay Harper. “He joins us at a time when the regional competition for the best students is extremely fierce. He will be tasked with increasing applications to Mary Washington while maintaining our admissions selectivity and high graduation rate. He will provide leadership to a group of dedicated and caring professionals within the division of student services. I am confident that Fred will make an excellent addition to the Mary Washington family.”
As associate provost, Pierce will be responsible for the Office of Admissions, the Office of the University Registrar, the Office of Academic Services, the Office of Disability Resources, and the Office of Career Services.
Pierce has been a member of the University of Tennessee staff since 1997. As undergraduate programs director, he has managed the business college’s curriculum development, study abroad activities, academic programs and support services. In addition, he has codirected the college honors program, supervised the college’s freshman experience and overseen the professional advising and academic services center for more than 5,000 undergraduates. He also was assistant director for the university’s College of Arts and Sciences advising services, a graduate assistant advisor for advising services and a graduate teaching assistant for the Department of Geography. Before his tenure with Tennessee, he was a program counselor with Project Discovery, a People Incorporated Community Action Agency, in Abingdon, Va.
At the University of Tennessee, Pierce received the College of Business Administration Outstanding Staff Award for Professionalism in 2004 and 2010 and the Provost’s Citation for Excellence in Advising in 2002.
He received a master’s degree from the University of Tennessee and a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Belk College of Business.
