Fredericksburg, Va. – The University of Mary Washington Galleries will host two exhibitions, “Art and Nature: Reflections on the Sublime” from Friday, September 2 through Friday, September 30 at the Ridderhof Martin Gallery, and “UMW Studio Art Faculty Exhibition” from Friday, September 2 through Friday, October 7 at the duPont Gallery.
The opening reception for “Art and Nature: Reflections on the Sublime” will be held Thursday, September 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ridderhof Martin Gallery. Robert Hobbs, renowned late-modern and post-modern art historian, will present the talk “The Contemporary Sublime” at the gallery on Sunday, September 18 at 2 p.m. Advance registration for the talk is required.
The opening reception for “UMW Studio Art Faculty Exhibition” will be held Thursday, September1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the duPont Gallery. Admission is free to the talks, receptions and exhibitions.
“Art and Nature: Reflections on the Sublime” includes the work of eight artists from Florida, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Each artist explores a personal vision, either real or imagined. These visions grapple with such notions as order and chaos, beauty and corruption, infinite space and the transforming power of nature.
“UMW Studio Art Faculty Exhibition” will showcase the works of faculty members Joe DiBella, Rosemary Jesionowski and Jon McMillan. DiBella, distinguished professor of art, has taught at Mary Washington since 1977 and will present watercolors and drawings. Jesionowski, assistant professor of art, will exhibit photography. McMillan, assistant professor of art, will present ceramics.
Both galleries are located on College Avenue on the Fredericksburg campus and are open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The galleries are closed during university holidays and breaks.
