The University of Mary Washington has been ranked among Washington Monthy’s “Best Bang for the Buck Colleges,” part of its 2015 College Guide published Monday, Aug. 24.
UMW is placed 16thamong 288 schools in the Southeast category of the list, which the magazine describes as an “exclusive list of schools that that help non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.”
According to the magazine, the College Guide “asks not what colleges can do for you, but what colleges are doing for the country.” The guide addresses topics including education of low-income students, improvement in quality of teaching, productivity and tuition costs.
Washington Monthly is a bimonthly nonprofit magazine covering politics, government, culture and the media. The magazine ranks institutions by social mobility, civic engagement and research. This is the fourth edition of the “Best Bang for the Buck Colleges” list.
UMW was one of four Virginia institutions included in the top 20 of southeast category. Radford University was ranked 12, the University of Virginia was ranked 13 and James Madison University was ranked 14.
In recent months, UMW has also been named to The Princeton Review’s 2016 edition of “The Best 380 Colleges” and Forbes’ 2016 list of “America’s Top Colleges.” For the sixth consecutive year, UMW was named as a “best buy” in the prestigious Fiske Guide to Colleges, and was the only institution in Virginia and the District of Columbia to be awarded this distinction.
