The University of Mary Washington Debate Team will host the British National Team for a debate on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Monroe Hall, Room 116.
The competing teams will debate the topic “This House regrets the decline of U.S. hegemony.” First-year students Parker Coon and Gabriel Lewis will represent UMW. They will debate Chessy Whalen, a member of the Oxford Union Debating Society, and Matthew Wilmore, a member of the University of Edinburgh. The debate is free and open to the public. Audience participation is welcomed.
This event is part of the 2015 British Debate Tour, sponsored by the National Communication Association and the Committee on International Discussion and Debate (CIDD).
UMW was selected by the CIDD to participate in the eight-week fall tour. Other host institutions include Pennsylvania State University, Duquesne University, Colgate University and Cornell University.
This debate will be the fourth one hosted by the UMW team on the Fredericksburg campus this semester, following an intercollegiate tournament and two additional public debates. The team also has completed intercollegiate tournament competitions in Georgia and Kentucky.
After the public debate against the British National Team, the UMW Debate Team will wrap up competition for the fall semester with tournaments at Liberty University and Wake Forest University. The team will sponsor another public debate in late November.
