Freshman guard Elizabeth Dofflemyer scored a game-high 18 points and sophomore Kendall Parker added 16 off the bench to lead the third-seeded No.22 University of Mary Washington women’s basketball team to a 73-55 victory at top-seeded Marymount University in the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Championship on Feb. 27. UMW head coach Deena Applebury claimed her 300th career win with the result, as the Eagles earn the league crown for the sixth time and return to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in her tenure.

“I am so proud of the entire team for coming together and making this happen. To win my 300th game in the CAC championship is truly amazing,” Applebury said. “I cannot thank the current team and alumni for all of their hard work and support. Special thank you to President Hurley and Ken Tyler.”
The Eagles advance to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time under Applebury and the 10th time overall in capturing their sixth CAC Championship. They will visit Maryville (Tenn.) University on Friday, March 4, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Eagles gain the automatic bid for winning the Capital Athletic Conference tournament, and are making their 10th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles have advanced to four Sweet 16s and one final four, in 2007.
The UMW head coach improves her career mark to 300-73, all achieved in Fredericksburg. A member of the UMW community since 2003, Applebury is a graduate of Versailles High School in Versailles, Mo., and earned a master’s degree in secondary education with an emphasis in physical education from University of Missouri-St. Louis in January of 2003. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from UM-St. Louis in 1999 and graduated cum laude. She also was a member of the Riverwomen women’s basketball team for two years. As a player, Applebury averaged 19.8 points, 3.9 rebounds per game and posted the fourth best single season output in school history with 534 points her senior year.
