The University of Mary Washington Philharmonic Orchestra presented its prestigious “Citizen Salute Award” to area businessman Howard Owen during its spring season finale concert.
The award is given annually by the Philharmonic’s Board of Directors to recognize outstanding community service and dedication to the arts.
“As a local business man and a Virginian, Howard is dedicated to supporting local organizations in any way that he can,” said Rosemary Barra, board chair, who presented the award. “He freely gives of his time and energy and believes strongly in actively participating in the community.”
Howard Owen moved to Fredericksburg 29 years ago to start Stafford Printing. He started his business with one employee and a single offset press. Today, he employs 15 people, several of whom have worked with him for 20 years.
Today, Owen is a leader in his field. He takes great pride in making his business as green as possible and also one that has digital capabilities to meet the ever-changing needs of his customers, according to Barra. Each year, Stafford Printing partners with Marstel-Day to present the Green Business Innovation Award to a local business or nonprofit.
Owen volunteers for the Friends of the Rappahannock, Jazz for Justice, Empowerhouse and Mary’s Shelter. For the last two years, he has served on the Stafford County Economic Development Authority. He is a member of the Rappahannock Rotary and the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce. Owen also is a member of the UMW Philharmonic Board. In addition, he participates as a trustee on the Stafford Hospital Foundation. He lives in Falmouth with his wife, Mary, and their son, John.
