The University of Mary Washington has been rated among the nation’s best by both The Princeton Review and the Washington Monthly. The Princeton Review featured the University in its 2017 edition of “The Best 381 Colleges,” which profiles only 15 percent of the nation’s 2,500 four-year colleges. The Washington Monthly ranked UMW 21st in the Top Master’s Universities category of the 2016 Washington Monthly College Rankings.
The Princeton Review is a New York City-based education services company that annually publishes guidebooks ranking colleges, business and law schools. The annual college guide includes detailed profiles of the colleges with school rating scores in eight categories, including admissions selectivity, academics and quality of life.
In its profile, The Princeton Review says UMW students applaud the university’s commitment to academics and the strong sense of community that pervades the campus body.
Students say that UMW provides “rigorous education in a fun and engagement atmosphere,” according to The Princeton Review. “Students rave about the ‘small, beautiful campus’ and ‘strong sense of community.’”
Washington Monthly also listed UMW as 51st in the “Best Bang for the Buck Southeast Colleges” category.
The Washington Monthly rates schools based on their contribution to the public good. The criteria includes social mobility that encompasses recruiting and graduating low-income students; research that produces cutting-edge scholarships and Ph.D.s; and service that encourages students to give back to their country.
