Amy Wick Mavis, executive director of PACE Center for Girls of Manatee County, Fla., has been named Graduate-in-Residence for the University of Mary Washington’s Department of Psychological Science.
Mavis will visit the Fredericksburg campus for three days, including Thursday, Sept. 22, for a public lecture titled “Girls & Boys are Different…From the Neck Up! PACE Center for Girls: A Gender Competent Model Changing Lives, One Girl a Time.” The talk will take place in the Hurley Convergence Center Digital Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
During her visit, Mavis will talk to four psychology classes about her work at PACE, a nonprofit organization providing outpatient educational, social and psychological services to at-risk adolescent girls. Mavis also will meet with students who are interested in pursuing careers working with at-risk teens.
After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree from Mary Washington College in 1987, Mavis received an M.Ed. with a specialization in exceptional children from the University of Delaware. Mavis began her work at PACE Center in 1995, becoming executive director in 1996.
UMW’s Graduate-in-Residence program began in 1995 as a part of career advising within the Department of Psychological Science, helping expose psychological science majors to UMW graduates working in their field. Each year, the psychology department faculty nominates alumni who participate in interesting work in the field of psychology.
The Graduate-in-Residence program is funded by the Department of Psychological Science. For more information about the Graduate-in-Residence program, contact the Department of Psychology at 540-654-1054.
