The University of Mary Washington’s Department of Theatre & Dance will continue its 2016-17 season with Steel Magnolias, Robert Harling’s classic Southern comedy.
Performances will take place Feb. 16-18 and 22-25 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 19 and 26 at 2 p.m. in Klein Theatre, located in duPont Hall on UMW’s Fredericksburg campus. There will be a Friday Night Out on Feb. 17 and a sign-interpreted performance on Saturday, Feb. 25. A post-show discussion with the cast, AfterWords, will be held after the matinee performance on Sunday, Feb. 19.
Steel Magnolias features an all-female cast, who will be wearing wigs designed by UMW alum and Broadway hairdresser and makeup artist Madeline LeCuyer ’11.
“It’s a great resource that we have available to our students to have people working professionally on Broadway learning these skills to come in and teach them what they are learning,” said Jon Reynolds, the department’s director of marketing and audience services.
Steel Magnolias brings to life a group of women in northwest Louisiana, spending time and gossiping in a small-town beauty shop. Popularized by a 1989 film, the play reminds us that the best things in life are the company of good friends, a hearty laugh and a trip to the beauty shop.
“This production will tug at the heartstrings,” Reynolds said.
Tickets are $18 for standard admission and $16 for students, senior citizens and military. Friday Night Out tickets are $35.
