The University of Mary Washington is commemorating Veteran’s Day with a card-signing initiative in the University Center organized by the University’s Association of Student Veterans. A table will be set up by the main staircase of the University Center’s Ball Street entrance on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The thank-you cards will be presented to representatives of the American Legion at a Friday reception between 10 a.m. and noon in the Colonnade Room of the University Center.
“The cards are a small way to show appreciation to the men and women who’ve served our country,” said Jessica Roberson, acting vice-president of UMW’s Association of Student Veterans. “By giving the cards to an American Legion veteran, we are able to reach many generations of veterans.” An Air Force veteran herself, Roberson works in the Veteran’s Resource Center assisting incoming student veterans in the transition process from military life to student and campus life.
Also, the student veterans’ association will hold an “Ask a Veteran” event on Thursday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon at the entrance of the University Center by the main staircase. Veterans will be on hand for students to ask questions regarding military service. Roberson said the aim of this event is to model ways to approach student veterans.
More than 300 student Veterans are enrolled at UMW this year. The University has been designated a Military Friendly® School for the past several years. The 2017 list, released by Victory Media, which publishes G.I. Jobs®, STEM Jobs℠, and Military Spouse.
The Veteran’s Resource Center, located in the University Center, supplies veterans with Virginia Veterans Resource Guides, information on CLEP test for veterans, disability information and helpful instructions on how to receive credit for service training.
