The University of Mary Washington chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, will hold the 33rd annual Psi Chi Research Symposium on Wednesday, April 25 and Thursday, April 26 in the HCC Digital Auditorium.
The keynote lecture will be given by Dr. Shari E. Miles-Cohen, the senior director of the Women’s Program Office of the American Psychological Association (APA) at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 26. Miles-Cohen’s lecture, “Applying Psychological Science to Improve People’s Lives and Benefit Society” and the symposium as a whole are free and open to the public.
Miles-Cohen received her Ph.D. in Personality Psychology from Howard University. Prior to her role as director of APA’s Women’s Program Office, she served as the executive director, The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues. She has also directed the Union Institute Center for Women, the African American Women’s Institute at Howard University, and the Women’s Research & Education Institute. She is co-editor of Eliminating Inequities for Women With Disabilities: An Agenda for Health and Wellness, published in 2016 by the American Psychological Association.
Miles-Cohen has specialized in the analysis of social, behavioral and economic factors that help women and girls both lead heathier lives themselves and also improve the lives of their families. Her professional contributions have largely taken the form of policy work in order to improve the lives of women, and particularly women of color, in the U.S.
The Psi Chi Research Symposium will be held in the HCC Digital Auditorium from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 25 and from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on April 26. The keynote speaker will begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The keynote address will be followed by the Department of Psychological Science awards ceremony which will begin at 5 p.m. on Thursday. A reception will follow the conclusion of the awards ceremony.
