We’re all Eagles at Mary Washington. But every spring, battle lines are drawn and sides are taken as students declare themselves Devils or Goats in this uniquely UMW event. Held on the Thursday before classes end, one of Mary Washington’s oldest traditions sees students gathering in Ball Circle for a carnival celebration and some friendly competition to win prizes and gain bragging rights on campus. Students who will graduate during an odd year are Devils; those with an even graduation year are Goats. Despite the rivalry, it’s all fun and games, and 2019’s Devil-Goat Day was no exception! Here are some highlights from the day.
Rebecca Young Butler-Guy says
I entered MWC in June 1958 and graduated May 1961. I was a Goat up until several months before graduation when I became a Devil. Talk about confused identity. I played on intramural teams as a Goat and wore the green and yellow beanie. Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia challenged me to go on to a Master’s at UVa in 1968 and then the MALS at MWC in 1990. I have kept close ties with the University of MW ever since. I am very grateful for the doors opened to me as a result of my degrees.
