The University of Mary Washington Galleries will hold an exhibition, “Images of Japan: A Portfolio of Modern Japanese Prints from Private Collections,” from Thursday, September 4 to Saturday, October 25 in the Ridderhof Martin Gallery. The opening reception will be on Wednesday, September 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The exhibition will include more than 100 limited-edition works on paper by 20 of Japan’s foremost contemporary printmakers. The display will showcase a full spectrum of printmaking techniques, including intaglio, relief, screen and planographic. The works feature both realistic and abstract images, ranging from origami to countryside landscapes.
Art collector and UMW alumna Leslie Huff will present a slide lecture, “An Appreciation of Contemporary Japanese Prints,” on Thursday, September 4 at noon in the gallery. A second lecture, “Snow, Moon and Flower: The Aesthetics of Modern Japanese Prints,” will be given on Friday, September 12 at noon by Dr. Mikiko Hirayama, associate professor at the University of Cincinnati, who is an expert on Japanese art.
The gallery, located at College Avenue at Seacobeck Street, is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Free parking is designated for gallery visitors in a lot across College Avenue at Thornton Street.
