Chinese-American poet, author and actor Beau Sia will speak as part of Asian Cultural Week at the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday, November 12 at 7 p.m. in the Woodard Campus Center, Great Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Author of “A Night Without Armor II: The Revenge,” Sia’s works have appeared in numerous anthologies including Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam. He has been featured in the “2000 ESPN X Games” and on “Hardball” with Chris Matthews, “Last Call with Carson Daly,” “Showtime at the Apollo” and “The Today Show.” His film credits include “Hitch” with Will Smith and “The Manchurian Candidate” with Denzel Washington. He also is one of the original cast members in Broadway’s “Def Poetry Jam,” winner of the 2003 Special Event Tony Award. Sia is involved with the Asian-American Writer’s Workshop and Youthspeaks, a non-profit group dedicated to developing the writing and performance of teens.
As part of Asian Cultural Week, the Asian Student Association will host Taste of Asia on Friday, November 14 at 7 p.m. in the Woodard Campus Center, Great Hall. Complete with a fashion show, dance performances and a variety of ethnic food, the event provides an inviting and festive atmosphere. Taste of Asia educates the community about the different aspects of Asian society and the various cultures and lifestyles represented therein. The cost is $3 per person.
