The University of Mary Washington announces the Dorsey Scholars Program, which offers scholarships to select students from diverse backgrounds. The program has been established through a $1.1 million Centennial Campaign gift from Paul R. and Mary Ann Dorsey Judy of Northfield, Ill. She is a graduate of the class of 1954.
Mary Ann Dorsey enrolled at Mary Washington in 1950 after graduating from Newport News High School. She met her husband, Paul, while on telephone duty in Ball Hall. The couple married shortly after her graduation.
Paul Judy, who received undergraduate and master’s degrees from Harvard University, named the Dorsey Scholars Program after his wife.
“I wanted her maiden name to be on this program as an honor, and because she was the student who attended and benefited from the Mary Washington education,” said Judy. “In many ways, she is a wonderful example for Dorsey Scholars to emulate their lives.”
The first Dorsey Scholarships will be granted for the 2009-2010 academic year to a minimum of five full-time undergraduate students of diverse backgrounds, including race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, disability, religion and geography. Additional selection criteria include demonstrated financial need and a commitment to community service, good citizenship and leadership.
