Tera Kovanes, an auditor with more than 12 years experience in city and state government, has been named director of internal audit for the University of Mary Washington.
Before coming to UMW, she was internal audit manager at the Department of Motor Vehicles, where she previously worked as a senior internal auditor and information technology expert. In addition, she has served as information technology audit manager for the City of Richmond, a senior internal auditor for the Virginia Lottery and a senior internal auditor and senior grants accountant for the City of Roanoke.
Kovanes earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Virginia Tech and is a certified public accountant, certified internal auditor and certified information systems auditor.
She is a member of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association, the Institute of Internal Auditors and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
Kovanes lives in Glen Allen with her husband, Anthony, and two sons.
