Salvatore M. Meringolo, vice president for Development at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, has been named to the position of vice president for Advancement and University Relations at the University of Mary Washington.
Meringolo will be responsible for the planning and direction of philanthropic initiatives and alumni affairs for the university. In addition, he will oversee the institution’s external relations and communication programs. He will start in August.
In announcing his appointment, President Judy G. Hample said, “I am extremely pleased that such an experienced and accomplished leader had decided to join us at the University of Mary Washington. I am certain that Torre Meringolo will build on the tradition of excellence at UMW and assist the university to advance to even greater heights.”
At St. Mary’s, Meringolo has served as vice president for Development since 1997, managing all aspects of external relations at the college, including fundraising, alumni relations, media relations, arts outreach, publications and events.
Under his leadership, the college successfully completed the largest fundraising initiative in the institution’s history, the $40 million Heritage Campaign. Meringolo was co-developer of the $65 million Maryland Heritage Project, a partnership between Historic St. Mary’s City and St. Mary’s College. He also developed a business/fundraising plan and implemented a major annual community arts program that draws more than 40,000 visitors to the St. Mary’s campus each summer.
Meringolo serves as the executive director of the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Foundation and secretary to the College’s Board of Trustees, overseeing all aspects of board relations, management and development. Under his direction, the foundation has generated over $2 million in annual support for college programs.
Earlier in his tenure at St. Mary’s College, Meringolo also served as director of Information Technology and the Library.
Before his arrival at St. Mary’s, he served as the associate dean of the University Libraries at The Pennsylvania State University. While at Penn State, he became actively involved in fundraising on behalf of the Libraries’ collections and programs.
He previously held positions at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Iona College.
Active in his community, Meringolo is a member of the board of directors of Southern Maryland Navy Alliance, a business organization that lobbies for federal and state support for the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. In addition, he served as vice president of the Patuxent Partnership, a community organization that represents U.S. Naval Aviation at Patuxent River, and is a member of the St. Mary’s County Economic Development Commission.
Meringolo holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the State University of New York at New Paltz, a master’s degree in library science from the State University of New York at Albany and a master’s degree in business administration from Iona College, Hagan School of Business. The university was assisted in the search by the firm of Greenwood/Asher and Associates.
Jeff Rountree, who has served as vice president for Advancement since 1999, was appointed chief executive officer for the UMW Foundation and president of the Eagle Village Property Holdings in October 2007. Rountree, who has been handling the Advancement duties during the past year while the search was underway, will take on his foundation duties full time upon Meringolo’s arrival.
