Award-winning author and public intellectual Michael Eric Dyson will be giving a public lecture at the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday, April 14, as a James Farmer Lecture in Human Rights. The 7 p.m. talk will be held in George Washington Hall, Dodd Auditorium. Earlier in the day, Dyson will meet with UMW students.
Dyson has written extensively on cultural criticism, race theory, religion, philosophical reflection and gender studies. His 2006 book, “Is Bill Cosby Right? Or Has the Black Middle Class Lost Its Mind?,” and his 2009 book ,“April 4, 1968: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Death and How It Changed America,” were both New York Times best-sellers.
Dyson is an American Book Award recipient and two-time NAACP Image Award winner. Ebony magazine named him one of the 150 most influential and renowned public intellectuals. He has appeared on The Today Show, Nightline, the O’Reilly Factor and The Colbert Report, among other television programs.
Dyson has taught at many universities, including Brown, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Columbia University. Currently, he is professor of sociology at Georgetown University.
