Joe Yonan, food and travel editor of the Washington Post, will serve as moderator for the University of Mary Washington’s Fredericksburg Forum on Thursday, September 23. The program, which features celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, will be held at 8 p.m. in George Washington Hall, Dodd Auditorium. Tickets are required.
Yonan has worked for the Washington Post since 2006. Under his leadership, the Post has twice been awarded the James Beard Award for the nation’s best newspaper food section.
In addition to editing, he writes occasional features for both Food and Travel sections, including the monthly “Cooking for One” column. His work has appeared in three editions of the “Best Food Writing” anthology.
Yonan is the co-author of “The Fearless Chef” with Boston chef Andy Husbands. Yonan’s book, “Serve Yourself: Nightly Adventures in Cooking for One,” is planned for release in March 2011.
A graduate of the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, Yonan earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. He grew up in Texas.
Anthony Bourdain is host of the Travel Channel’s popular travel and food series, “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” in which he explores exotic places worldwide seeking authentic experiences in foods that flavor global cultures.
A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Bourdain is a 28-year veteran of professional kitchens. His of New York restaurants, “Don’t Eat Before Reading This,” formed the basis of his memoir, “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly.” In 2002, the Food Network broadcast a 22-part series in which Bourdain traveled the world in search of “extreme cuisine.” The resulting book, “A Cook’s Tour: In Search of the Perfect Meal,” became a best-seller and won the 2002 Guild of Food Writers Award for Food Book of the Year.
Bourdain also is author of “The Nasty Bits: Collected Varietal Cuts, Useable Trim, Scraps, and Bones,” and “No Reservations: Around the World on an Empty Stomach.” His latest work, “Medium Raw,” was released in summer 2010.
Fredericksburg Forum is a long-running community-sponsored program underwritten by season ticket sales that bring nationally known speakers to the Fredericksburg community and the university. General admission tickets for the September program are $35, orchestra tickets are $40. Tickets also are available for the March 17, 2011 program with best-selling suspense novelist Scott Turow.
