The James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library has received a $4,000 gift from the Stewart Jones Charitable Trust. The donation will be applied to costs associated with the museum’s public programs in 2013, according to museum director Scott Harris.

A native of Stafford County, Va., Helen Stewart Jones graduated from Mary Washington in 1936, received a master’s degree in 1950 from George Washington University and a Ph.D. in education from American University in 1970. Throughout her life and career, Jones was dedicated to educating young people at all levels and to preserving historic sites, buildings and history in general. Active in many local historical and preservation organizations, she was a Life Member of the Friends of the James Monroe Museum, a designation for those who rendered outstanding service to the museum through their financial support and acts of service. In 1991, the University of Mary Washington honored Jones with the Distinguished Alumna Award.
“The James Monroe Museum was important to Dr. Jones, and this gift reflects that legacy,” said Russell Roberts, trustee of the Stewart Jones Charitable Trust. “I am pleased that the trust can support the good work done by this museum in our community.”
The James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library is a National Historic Landmark owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia and administered by the University of Mary Washington. Founded in 1927, it is the nation’s largest repository of artifacts and documents related to the fifth President of the United States.
