The University of Mary Washington, in partnership with international environmental consulting firm Marstel-Day and the Rappahannock Group of the Sierra Club, will host a screening of the film The Burden on Tuesday, April 5.
The film aims to educate the public about the burden that fossil fuel dependence places on the United States and its military and the efforts being made to lift this burden. The documentary, which is by Sorkin Productions in association with the Truman Project on National Security and Center for National Policy, discusses the relationship between clean energy and national security, stating that they are not separate issues and the U.S. Armed Forces is “taking a leading role” in finding safe, sustainable solutions for the future. The public screening is free of charge and will begin at 7 p.m. in the Chandler Ballroom of the University Center.
Following the screening, a discussion panel will be held featuring a variety of high-ranking current and former military officials. Panelists include Gen. Anthony Zinni, USMC (ret.), who has been awarded 23 military awards and participated in several presidential diplomatic missions; RDML Douglas Morton (USN), who is currently serving as director of Energy and Environmental Readiness on the Chief of Naval Operations staff; and Bert Guerrero, who is the deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for Operational Energy.
Also on the panel are president and CEO of Marstel-Day Rebecca Rubin and professor of political science at UMW Jason Davidson, who will serve as the moderator.
This event is co-sponsored by the UMW President’s Council on Sustainability, Marstel-Day and the Rappahannock Group of the Sierra Club.
