Through Pandemic, Research Remains Top Priority at UMWTranscript
Hi. My name is Thanh-Binh Duong, and I’m a senior in the earth and environmental sciences department. My research project is titled “The Presence, Distribution, and Concentration of Microplastics In the Lower Basin of the Chesapeake Bay, USA Near Wastewater Treatment Plants.” My research focuses on microplastic pollution, specifically in the Rappahannock River. Microplastics are plastic particles that are smaller than 5 millimeters in size and can originate from either industrial processes, personal care products, as well as the breakdown of larger plastic items. Research as a whole is important in expanding the range of knowledge that both the scientific community as well as the general public needs in order to better understand important issues in society. By my research, as well as the research of others looking at microplastic pollution, we can expand this pool of knowledge and implement this information into regulation and laws that can help protect health and humanity, as well as protect wildlife.
