The Faculty Credentials Policy was revised in December 2012 to add the statement below to the “Definition” section of the policy:
A terminal degree (usually a doctorate) is the highest degree awarded in the discipline/field. In some fields, a degree other than a doctorate is considered a terminal degree by practitioners in that discipline. The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) is considered a terminal degree for studio art, creative writing, and theatre production/performance. The Master of Historic Preservation (MHP) is a terminal degree in historic preservation.
You will find the policy in Book D, Academic Affairs, under Section 2, UMW Faculty.
