Mission Statement Committee
Objective
Since UMW’s current mission statement was adopted by the Board of Visitors in 2010, much has changed in our country, the commonwealth, higher education and at UMW. It is time to review the current statement to ensure that it reflects UMW accurately and distills the statement from nearly 300 words to approximately 30 thereby memorably capturing the essence of the university today. Although this process will take several months because it involves approval from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), the first phases of this process should move quickly. The goal is to have a new mission statement within the next year in advance of our next comprehensive strategic planning process. To lead this work, President Paino has assembled an eight-member group:

Process and Timeline
- Phase 1 – draft a charge (April 1-10, 2024)
- Phase 2 – offer the community the opportunity for feedback (April 15-April 26, 2024) to include meetings of the UFC, USC, and Alumni Association Board of Directors and a community-wide survey
- Phase 3 – refine based upon feedback
- Phase 4 – share with the Board of Visitors for feedback
- Phase 5 – further refine based upon feedback
- Phase 6 – Board of Visitors adopt the new mission statement
- Phase 7 – New mission statement is reviewed and accepted by SCHEV.
