Most students who live on campus will have a roommate during their time at Mary Washington. One of the most asked questions before Housing Selection is about how to get connected with potential roommates, and we are here to help! Read through this page for helpful tips about roommate groups and preparing to select your housing for next year.
Roommate Mixer
Cedric Rucker University Center
5 – 8 PM, February 21st
The Roommate Mixer is an event designed to facilitate roommate connections for those who may are looking for a roommate or who just want to make a new friend. Stop by the Roommate Mixer in the CRUC Living Room from 5 – 8 PM on February 21 to meet other UMW students who may be looking for a roommate! There will be professional Residence Life staff present to answer questions about Housing Selection or residence halls.
Whether you are still looking for roommates or you just have a general question, you are welcome at the Roommate Mixer! Some frequent scenarios are described below and may help as you think about your plan for Housing Selection.
I am looking for a roommate. This event is for you! Stop by the Roommate Mixer to meet other students who are also trying to find a roommate. It would be a good idea to think about what aspects of living with a roommate are most important to you, but there is no preparation required to attend.
I have a roommate group already. Great! Please make sure you have signed your housing application with your UMW ID before March 8th. We recommend discussing your top residence hall choices with your group before selection begins in mid-March. Remember, roommate group size will determine your residence hall options so be sure to come to the roommate mixer to see what options will be available to you during selection. It is a good idea to have a few top options in case your most preferred option is not available during your timeslot.
I don’t want to make a roommate group and I want a single room? You aren’t required to make a roommate group. All roommate groups will select before individuals who are not in a roommate group (beginning with 4-person groups, then 3-person groups, then 2-person groups). Individuals without a group will select from remaining available single rooms and individual vacancies in double rooms after all roommate groups have first had the chance to select their space. Not joining a roommate group does not mean that you will not have a roommate.
I have general housing selection questions. Professional Residence Life staff will be in the CRUC to answer your questions.
I’ve never been in upperclass halls. Can I visit them? Yes! Home Sweet Hall is a program that allows you to look at rooms in residence halls to get an idea of your housing selection options and make informed choices during selection. Home Sweet Hall will run simultaneously with the roommate mixer and take place from 5 – 8 PM on February 21.
